A Kid-Friendly Syracuse Weekend: Destiny USA, the Zoo, and a Hotel Pool

Rosamond Gifford Zoo in Syracuse, NY — a great kid-friendly stop

A weekend trip to Syracuse with kids doesn't have to be complicated. We've helped hundreds of families get it right — and the itinerary is surprisingly doable, affordable, and fun at every age from 3 to 13.

Why Families Choose Liverpool Over Downtown

When families call us about a Syracuse weekend, the first thing we tell them is: Liverpool is the right base. Here's why it matters when you have kids.

Free parking with no garage stress. Loading and unloading a car with small children, strollers, bags, and snacks is enough of a production without a parking structure and an elevator. Our lot is flat, uncovered, and free — pull up to the entrance and you're in.

Free hot breakfast every morning. 6:30 to 9:30 a.m., included with every room. Eggs, protein, cereal, fruit, waffles, coffee. Not a continental-breakfast tray — actual hot food. This matters enormously when you're dealing with hungry kids who were up at 6 a.m. and you don't want to find a restaurant before you've had coffee.

Indoor heated pool and hot tub. This is the secret weapon. The pool is available in the evening, and every parent who has used it after a full day of sightseeing has told us it's what made the trip for the kids. They swim, they're exhausted, they sleep.

Two-queen rooms that fit a family. Our two-queen rooms are renovated and comfortable. If you need a suite with more space, we have those too. Call (315) 701-4400 and we'll match you to the right room for your family's size.

Quiet neighborhood. Liverpool is residential and calm. There's no bar noise, no street traffic at 2 a.m. The kids sleep and so do you.

Saturday Morning: Destiny USA and Apex / WonderWorks

Destiny USA is 4 miles and 8 minutes from the hotel — the sixth-largest mall in the country and home to several indoor attractions that work especially well for families with younger children.

WonderWorks is an upside-down indoor amusement park with over 100 hands-on science and exploration exhibits. Kids 4 to 12 tend to go absolutely haywire here in the best possible way. Plan for two hours minimum. It's loud, it's engaging, and it's indoors — which matters in April or November when the weather is doing Central New York things.

Apex Entertainment is next door — bowling, laser tag, mini-golf, an arcade, and a full food and drink menu. This one works better for kids 7 and up who have enough attention span for multi-activity entertainment. The bowling lanes are well-maintained and the laser tag arena is genuinely fun for competitive older kids.

The mall itself has a full food court if you need something quick. Check our Destiny USA hotel page for more on our proximity to the mall.

Saturday Lunch: Brooklyn Pickle or Heid's

After the mall, lunch in Liverpool is the move. Both of these are 10 minutes or less from both Destiny USA and the hotel:

Brooklyn Pickle is a proper deli with enormous sandwiches — stacked generously, made to order, with house-made pickles on the side. Kids who are old enough to eat a real sandwich love it; for younger kids, order a half and split it. Loud, lively, very Liverpool.

Heid's of Liverpool is the faster option and the more kid-specific experience — hot dogs, dipper-dogs (bite-size corn dogs), root beer floats, outdoor picnic tables. If you have kids under 8, Heid's wins. Order a white-hot for yourself while you're at it. It's been a Central New York institution since the 1920s.

Saturday Afternoon: Rosamond Gifford Zoo

The Rosamond Gifford Zoo at Burnet Park is one of the most underrated small zoos in the Northeast — well-maintained, thoughtfully designed, and completely manageable in an afternoon. Plan for 2.5 to 3 hours with young children; older kids who move faster can do it in 2.

Highlights include the Asian elephant habitat (one of the largest in the Northeast for a mid-size zoo), the penguin pavilion, the snow leopards, and the hands-on discovery center for younger visitors. Admission is very reasonable compared to major-city zoos. The zoo sits in Burnet Park on a hill south of downtown — about 12 minutes from the hotel on a weekend with no traffic.

Late afternoon at the zoo works well: the animals are often more active as the day cools, and crowds thin after 3 p.m. on most days.

Saturday Night: Hotel Pool

This is the evening plan that parents tell us made the whole trip. Come back to the hotel, change into swimsuits, and spend 45 minutes to an hour in the indoor heated pool. The pool is warm, the hot tub is available for adults, and the kids will use every bit of remaining energy in there. By 9 p.m. everyone is ready for bed, which is exactly where you want to be after a full day.

Breakfast is at 6:30 a.m. Set a reasonable alarm.

Sunday Morning: Onondaga Lake Park and Wegmans Boundless Playground

Onondaga Lake Park is 4 minutes from the hotel and entirely free. After breakfast, load up the stroller or just walk and head over. The Wegmans Boundless Playground is a fully accessible, large-format playground designed so children with any mobility level can play together on the same equipment. It's excellent, well-maintained, and surrounded by open green space for kids who need room to run.

The paved West Shore Trail along the lake is good for strollers and a pleasant walk — go as far as makes sense for your group and turn around. The Carousel at Lakeview Point is free and operates seasonally (weekends and select weekdays in spring through fall) — if it's running when you're there, it's worth the 10-minute detour. See our local area page for more on what's open near the lake.

Rainy-Day Backup: The MOST

If Sunday brings rain, the Museum of Science & Technology (MOST) in downtown Syracuse is the reliable indoor backup. It's a hands-on science museum with an IMAX theater, physics exhibits, and interactive areas that work well for kids 4 through 12. Plan 2 to 3 hours and check the IMAX schedule in advance — the dome shows are a highlight for kids who've never seen one. Budget about 15 minutes to drive from Liverpool.
